SIMPLIFICATION OF SCIENCE PART 2: QUIZZES includes 40 quizzes that teach physical, earth, space and life science concepts with valuable background information for instructors where needed. In addition, there are more than 50 website references for further background knowledge that give educators confidence to present the inquiries and the quizzes. The quizzes may be used as a mini-lesson on a particular topic or as an additional resource for a unit you may be teaching. e.g. States of Water; Phases of the Moon; Animal Environments, etc. For the price, each quiz is less than a dollar, and if you use them over several years, the cost keeps going down.
How to effectively use the quizzes
The quizzes may be given as an entry task, at the beginning of a science period, or whenever the instructor has about 30 minutes of time. Some are 10 or more questions, some are less, and the time to take them will vary, but most all can be given and corrected in about 30 minutes. They were created with a different number of questions, to allow teachers flexible time management. Sometimes a quiz with a few questions generates a lot of information and leads to follow up by the students using a website or independent research.
Even if the subject matter of the quiz has not been taught, give the quiz anyway. Many students will have some knowledge of the content and may do fairly well. When the quiz is corrected, the instructor shares the answers and can give a “mini lesson” about the concept. Doing this will introduce the main ideas and can be used as a base for further study. Use the additional websites included in the notes of the quiz for further knowledge or have students use them for getting a different perspective. Some websites have interactive activities that engage students.
