SIMPLIFYING ALGEBRAIC Expressions - a tarsia or jigsaw puzzle

All math students need to be able to simplify algebraic expressions. This is a great activity to help them practice that skill.
This resource is useful in stations, assigned as an individual challenge, or with an intervention group/individual.
Puzzle pieces include icons that add interest and make checking easier.
-----------------------------------
This resource includes:
A Tarsia-style puzzle on SIMPLIFYING ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS where students combine like terms to simplify an expression.
A mat template; to place puzzle pieces.
Expressions in a table format for use when it is not convenient to cut/glue puzzle pieces; i.e. a student was absent or missed class. You can also ask students to show the steps on the table that they used to simplify each expression.
Solution for the expressions in the table.
Solutions for the puzzle (graphic and image).
-----------------------------------
IDEAS for USE

PRINT a page of puzzle pieces and the mat (consider printing the mat on color paper for contrast) / one per student or group.
PROVIDE scissors and glue stick (or tape).
OR
Use the included table and challenge students to find the values, showing the steps that accomplish this task.
OR
Use the solution shown in the table and cut apart the cells to create a card match using the strips created.
---------------------------------
There are nine pairs of expressions and solutions that assemble into a pyramid shape. I like to grade this as a ten point assignment; one point for each correct match and the tenth point for persevering to solve the puzzle and presenting an accurate solution (properly assembled).

This resource is great as an anchor activity or differentiation activity to engage and challenge a variety of learners.
