About this product
Explicitly teaching academic vocabulary is a key part of the SIOP model. This 4 square vocabulary template (also known as a Frayer model) can help your students build academic vocabulary and can also spark worthwhile discussions about examples, non-examples, and images to represent a word. This product contains four templates to teach vocabulary associated with Ready Math Grade 8, Lesson 11.
Labels for word, image, meaning, examples, and non-examples are included. The target word is already filled in.
All parts from template 1, plus small images that related to the labels.
All parts from template 2, plus text with the word meaning filled in.
: Completely filled in form: may be used as an answer key/teacher guide/scaffolded resource.
Suggested ways to use
•Select the template that is appropriate for your students and lead them through the completion of the template with selected vocabulary word(s).
•Ask students to share what they included in the boxes.
•Avoid information overload: one to two words in a given day might be a reasonable amount. I often like to use these during the introduction of the lesson.
•Use with interactive notebooks.
•Use as an interactive study tool: cover up the word in the middle and have students quiz each other to guess the word using information from the form.
•Use as a quiz or formative assessment: Provide a student with a blank version with only the word in the center and have the student fill in the rest.
•Scaffold the activity for different learners: Fill in some or all of the information and provide to students instead of having them fill in all the boxes.
•Consider letting students use these as a resource on quizzes or tests.
