THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST in the SIX BOOKS READING CHALLENGE
The complete Reading Log Book
After teaching challenged readers for the past few years I've come to realize that reading SIX BOOKS can be overwhelming for some of my students. Still I believe it's an achievable goal and I believe in my students! I designed a daily reading log with interchangeable pages. The students reads for 10 or 20+ minutes a day, then completes a sentence describing what was read. (The sentence can be comprehension, connection, etc.) There is a separate log page for each day. There's also a place to write down the words the reader comes across that seem impossible to sound out.
Mentoring a good reader sometimes takes all year to accomplish. I believe the very best thing a teacher can do is show interest and frequently check in with each student. This student-valued log book helps the teacher and students view reading progress in a friendly, manageable way. If you’re wondering why the student signs their own book and not the parent, it’s because I ask my students to be accountable for their own work. (Plus they get a ton of signature practice!) I make a point to speak to my students on a mature level, regardless of their capabilities, and I demand specific expectations. They respond by trusting me and wowing me with their accomplishments. My favorite question when I approach a student is, “What book are you reading right now?” I used to get shrugs, now I get book titles and huge smiles. My response. “Wow, that’s great!”
There are several ways to use the files:
1. Print out the FREE Reading Log - Supplement Page to use as needed. (Link above)
2. Purchase this full 13 page PDF. You’ll get printing instructions and a diagram that shows how to assemble the whole book, and manage the add-on pages. (Uses a minimum of 17 letter sized pages per book.) Includes: Covers, Title pages, Genre page, Log pages, Book Review pages with Rating Stars, Mentor page, Illustrate favorite scene pages, and an ongoing note area to write specific words for later study. TIP: The full PDF, fully assembled, makes a valued Last Day of School gift that encourages students to read all summer.
3. Alternative: Use this full 13 page PDF to print and staple separate Title Booklets for classroom use. (Requires a minimum of 5 letter sized pages per every 3 booklets.) Instructions are included.
Why Six books? Because I’m also a Boy Scout Merit Badge Counselor for the
Las Vegas area, and the requirement for the Reading Merit Badge is SIX BOOKS.
It’s a good goal!
