S.M.i.L.E or Structure Method in Language Education is a program that helps students with special needs learn to read. This product is for Module 2 of the S.M.i.L.E program which focuses on building up students functional vocabulary through nouns using the phonemes that the student learned in Module 1.
In this product you will have 4 different ways to work on and assess your students abilities in the program.
1. Linking picture to picture: This also correlates to ABLLS B5 matching pictures to sample. This is an important step as it shows the student to focus on the illustrations. Illustrations are an important function in literacy they hold a lot of information. This is also important for our students with disabilities because it helps them link the photo to real word examples.
2. Linking picture to phonemes: In module 2 students are introduced to different ways the phonemes can be represented (i-e can also be ie and ey). This shows the different spellings in red for the student to become more used to the spelling and to practice the sounds in all forms of the spelling.
3. Linking the picture to the word: In module 2 it is important for the student to blend all the phonemes together to make the noun. In this task card the word is written in one color to show the student that this is how the word is written. This is also important because it links the photo to the word, which is the beginning of developing comprehension.
4. Build the word: In module 2 students begin to write the words sounding them out using the phonemes they learned in module 1. For some of our disabled students the act of writing and holding a pencil or marker is extremely difficult. Using these task cards the student is able to build the word using Velcro and laminated letters. On these task cards the students are continuing to link the picture to the noun and develop the comprehension aspect of literacy.
