The Bubonic Plague was so deadly that it took 1/3rd of Europe's population. Lasting three years, there is a great account by Italian Giovanni Boccaccio who survived the plague in Florence. This event details the symptoms, social breakdown, doctor's inability to cure the disease, and the result of mass burials in Europe.
