This 105-slide PowerPoint includes everything you need to teach your students about the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The ppt is geared towards my Geography class, but the information included could work with almost any social studies course. The ppt starts out with discussion questions about why the Olympics are important and then moves on to general information about the games in Sochi such as the location of the city & its weather, why countries want to host the games, some consequences of hosting, and why these games are particularly important to Russia. There is also general info like when the Olympics start, the number of participating countries, which sports are played, etc. After the general information, I give a basic introduction to each of the 15 sports with information such as basic rules, the events included, medal hopefuls, past medal winners, and U.S. athletes competing in the events. There is also a link to a separate YouTube video for each of the 15 sports with some sports having more than one. I've been using these slides and videos as a way of introducing my students to the different sports they can see. They love it! This PowerPoint is a great way to get your kids pumped about the Olympics and is completely editable to meet your individual classroom needs. And it's a great value for everything that's included!
