What you are actually purchasing is a Word document with the Guess Access name to my Portaportal for 3rd grade. My Portaportal gets new assignments and games added on a weekly basis that are aligned with the SOLS on our districts Instructional Calendar. The way it is used at our school is that I see each class in the computer lab once a week, during that time students complete their assignments (in the assignments folder) these are self-grading online activities. Once they have completed the given number of assignments for the week, scoring a 70 or higher on each one ( I hand out Smarties for Smarties – 100s) then they move onto Math, Reading, and Typing games of their choice, which are all links to specific games for SOL review, even though a student clicks a link to a game taking them to multiplication.com or abcya.com, they know the game that loads is the “good for your brain game” that I choose, they know not to click side links, or to go browsing for other games on the site. Each link opens in a new tab, so if they no longer want to play the one they chose, they close the tab and the poraportal is still logged in. In general you can use the assignments for grades, or simply practice if you would like. Our classroom teachers use my portaportal as a reading or math station or a “brain break” time where the last 10-15 minutes of math or reading is playing my portaportal, students love it and work really hard to achieve good scores, equating in more SOL review game time. I keep the current weekly assignments folder hidden during the week, except when I have that grade inm y room, and until all classes in that grade have finished it, so the assignments are always there for review or more practice.
Every time a student gets a 70 or higher I write down their score on their classes recording sheet, and at the end of the week I had bright colored heart shaped beads to their individual baggies on the interactive data board, so they can keep track of how well they are doing, and others as well. After a months worth of assignments ( a short month this time) students passing enough assignments (3, 4 or 5 out of 5 this month since it was short) earn free time (cool math, fun brain, etc whatever they are into that is school appropriate) for one week, and then the following week we start over with earning beads towards free time except their data board baggies are cumulative. The students who do not earn free time, they carry on with that weeks assignments.
