This packet includes an original narrative non-fiction (biographical) passage and 9 corresponding questions (aligned with Reading SOL 4.4 and 4.5). The passage is about Gertrude Ederle, the first woman to swim across the English Channel. I like to use this in class during SOL review, though you may choose to use it as a homework assignment or assessment.
Two versions are included:
- In the first version, the format is modeled after the end-of-year online Reading SOL test. The passage is on the left-hand side (students will need to turn pages in order to read the whole story, similar to the online test) and the questions are on the right. This is a great way to reinforce that students have to go back/forward to a different page of the passage in order to find answers to their questions. (5 pages)
- In the second (standard) version, the passage is presented and the questions follow. This version is pictured in the last thumbnail above. (4 pages)
Answer keys for both versions are provided.
