Here is a song packet for the super popular song Chocolat by French singer Lartiste. Use this SONG PACKET to get your kids into French music, culture, and language.
-Grammar Practice (Passe compose)
-Pseudonym generating prompt!
PSEUDONYM TIP: kids can look up French baby names to find a name they like (maybe by first letter, meaning, etc)
This is a longer packet (4 pages) because it is for kids who have a little more French. You will notice the longer intro about the artist's life. My kids know not to be intimidated by quantity but to browse and see how much they can get out of it. This is not a word-for-word translation exercise. After giving them some time to scan it for themselves have them talk with a partner and share their observations then go over it together. Ask them first! You will be amazed how much they got (esp once you get the whole class' observations)!
Songs are a great way for kids to learn unusual/out-of-the-Book vocabulary. This packet not only introduces the lyrics but also pulls out key Grammar concepts from the song that they can practice. In this case Passe Compose verbs.
Continue to play this song in the background throughout the rest of this unit while students work quietly on projects, review, etc. I begin playing this a few weeks before so that by the time we do the packet they are saying 'I feel like I've heard this somewhere before?' Hehehehe...into the subconscious :)
