This package contains 2 of the 5 sets of cards which have been split due to upload limits. The 5 sets target graduated ability levels that develop a student's ability to identify the long vowel sounds and the spelling patterns associated with those sounds. This level of phonemic awareness contributes to growing confidence in reading and writing.
I use these cards in a multi-sensory way. I have laminated them and choose the cards that target a particular skill, e.g.,
- CVCe (Magic e or Bossy e)
- CVVC patterns (when two vowels go walking the first does the talking)
- sleepy a (as in bread, thread, feather)
- exceptions (as in shield, island, icicle, ivy)
I have made little boxes to look like Post Boxes and I label them according to the skill I am wanting to develop. The student 'posts' the card saying the sound, i.e., "a, as in cade". I also teach the terminology 'long vowel sounds' and 'short vowel sounds'.
Any long-term teacher will tell you, it's the vowel sounds that present the most difficulty for some students. Using the cards is a fun and motivating way that students can hear and see the words over and over.
Although these cards are ideal for 1:1 and small group RTI, they can also be added to a Literacy Centre. I have included the directions for 3 games: Memory, Snap and Donkey. There's a DONKEY card in the set as well. Simply choose the card pairs for the elements you want to consolidate and teach the rules and it becomes an independent activity.
