These cards have been designed for my students who need support to develop phonemic awareness in being able to discriminate between long and short vowel sounds. The four sets involve incremental but subtle levels of increasing difficulty.
At the foundation level students sort cards into long vowel and short vowel sounds. The next skill is classifying the vowel sounds - you can choose to discriminate between two or more sounds depending on your students' ability levels. I have little boxes I have decorated like Post Boxes with slits in the top. It adds the kinaesthetic element to a multi sensory activity. They say the sound as they 'post' the card into the box with the matching label. You could just as easily use paper plates for sorting.
The cards can be classified in a number of ways depending on your teaching focus:
CVC (short vowel words) - choose two or more sounds for discrimination
Sort short and long sounds of the same vowel
Provide the missing vowels on the blank cards
Match Picture only cards with Word only cards
CVCe (Magic e or Bossy e) - this is more a visual skill, and transfers to writing
CVVC (When two vowels go walking, the first does the talking)
EA combination where a is sleeping (e.g., bread, feather, thread)
This is the fourth package in the series. It is specifically targeted for RTI and I recommend it for individuals and small groups. You could also add it to a Literacy Centre as a game or writing activity with the cards that have blanks instead of vowels or the cards that only have pictures. You are able to differentiate to ability level in this way.
My cards are laminated for regular use as I have found the students who experience the most difficulty in their reading ability are those whose phonemic awareness is problematic. Going back to this skill level brings these students on as they gain confidence in recognising spelling patterns in their reading and are aware of more choices in their writing. You can vary skill levels in the Games by choosing which sets to use. Your more able students will find matching word only with picture only cards enjoyable and it will consolidate their skills with these spelling patterns.
