There are 5 sets of cards in this package:
1. 80 cards with matching pictures and words (short vowels only)
2. 80 cards with vowels in red font
3. 80 cards with blanks for vowels
4. 80 cards with pictures only
5. 80 cards with words only
PLUS - Directions to play 3 card games and a DONKEY card to play DONKEY.
These sets can be used for different levels of ability. The matching pictures and words cards can be used for discriminating between short vowel sounds. I have made a set of post boxes with slits in the top for this activity but you could do the same thing with paper plates. You could target two sounds or include all short vowel sounds. My students say the vowel sound and put the card into the matching box at the same time. This is a multi-sensory strategy which some students need. The addition of games means they can practise the skill over and over without the boredom that comes with worksheets.
The cards with vowels in RED lend themselves to sorting into vowel families and are the next step before the BLANKS. At this stage they are synthesising their visual and auditory memory to complete the word. Once this is mastered they are ready for the same range of skills at whole word level. You can mix and match sets to play the card games included. This is the most enjoyable way to consolidate learning and is easily incorporated into a Literacy Centre.
I have used a DYSLEXIA FRIENDLY FONT for inclusivity. This package builds on the SORT IT CARDS CVC package and precedes the long vowel package. It is a fun way to develop phonemic awareness of short vowel sounds, which is a critical skill for progress in reading and a precursor for successful spelling and writing.
