SOS: Survival in the Wild Research and Teaching Unit
This research project and teaching activities are designed for the middle and high school classroom. Our culture and students are fascinated with survival stories. This teaching packet includes numerous nonfiction articles, informational texts, and digital resources highlighting man's struggle to survive conflict in nature; or in this case, TEENS who have faced conflicts in nature but ultimately triumph in the end.
Their survival skills and determination will amaze your students, inspire them, and will help facilitate within your students a positive growth mindset when they learn about the determination of these real life teen survivors!
The activities can be used in a variety of contexts such as:
•Study of external conflict man vs. nature;
•Supplementary resources for a thematic unit on survival in the wild;
•Analysis of the power of the mind and individual will to survive;
•Integrating a short term, high interest research unit titled SOS: True Life Teen Survival Stories.
The activities can accompany themes present in a number of middle and high school novels and short stories including, but not limited to, the following:
Most Dangerous Game, To Build a Fire, Lord of the Flies, Hatchet, Hunger Games, Into the Wild, Into Thin Air, Touching Spirit Bear, My Side of the Mountain, Man and the Sea, Call of the Wild, Touching Spirit Bear

For differentiation, three project sheets are included with three teaching rubrics: Design a Survival Skills brochure, Design a Survival Skills Google Slideshow or PowerPoint presentation based on your research, Write a research-based informational essay based on Survival in the Wild
The Teen Survivors and Survival Skills research and final project take 3-5 days to complete. This Survival in the Wild Teaching Packet addresses numerous ELA writing and reading Common Core academic learning standards. The Teacher's Notes in this packet includes a sample list.
