Product Description
What a fun way to increase expressive vocabulary and practice categorization. This download is made with the non-reader in mind. It includes twelve reproducible paper hand toys (“Coin Catchers”) for practicing expressive vocabulary skills and categorization skills while playing the game of Coin Catcher. Students will have the opportunity to increase their word knowledge at school or at home. For extra practice, the “Coin Catcher” may be sent home with students. While playing the game, during each turn students are asked to name three items pictured in the area picked and then must prompt another student to name the category to which they belong. A list of the target categories and “Coin Catcher” assembly instructions is included. A title sheet is also included and can be used as a label for the Ziploc bag that the cards can be stored in.

DIRECTIONS
2 to 6 players

Setup:
•Print one copy of the “Treasure Chest” mat (pages 8) for each student on cardstock and laminate for durability. Distribute one mat to each student. Student should place the mat on the table in front of them.
•Print six to ten copies of “Coin Cards” (page 7) laminate for durability and then cut apart.
•Print one copy of a paper hand toy (“Coin Catcher”) for each student (pages 9-19). Each student in the group should receive a different “Coin Catcher”. The therapist may assembly the paper “Coin Catcher” ahead of time or the students can assemble it during therapy. See pages 5 & 6 for assembly instructions. Extra “Coin Catchers” have been included in this game for variety. Distribute one “Coin Catcher” to each student.

Playing The Game:
Choose a player to start the game. The first player chooses a color coin on his/her “Coin Catcher” and spells out the color, moving the flaps in and out, and side to side in time with the letters. That player then chooses a number from the inside numbers shown. The player then counts up to this number, in the same manner as before, moving the flaps in and out and side to side. The player then lifts the flap under a number of his choice and names the items pictured and then calls upon another student in the group to name the category to which they belong. If that student names the correct category, he/she receives a coin card and places in on his/her treasure chest mat. If the category named is incorrect, the first player calls upon another student in the group to name the category and if that student is correct he/she would receive the coin card. If students are unable to name the category, no one receives the coin card. That student that correctly named the category now uses his or her “Coin Catcher in the same manner…. Picks a color coin and spells out the color, moving the flaps, then chooses a number from inside and counts while moving the flaps again and finally chooses a number again lifts the flap and names the pictures and calls upon a student who has not had a turn to name the category. If that student names the correct category he/she receives a coin card. Play continues in this manner. If no student can name the category the same player repeats his/her turn.

Winning
The winner is the player who receives the most coin cards in the allotted time.
