This is a /s/ blend activity that targets initial consonant deletion, as in “pot” for “spot.” This activity works similar to “minimal pairs” where the /s/ blend word is presented with and without the /s/.
The student will say the word without the /s/ and then move the /s/ physically onto the word to form the /s/ blend.
