Product Description
This fun game is designed to help students spell and read short vowel sounds. There are five different sets (one for each short vowel sound). Each set has 10-12 words students can make with the sound they are working with.

It is great for small groups, centers or one-on-one instruction.

To set up:
Print (cardstock would be best), laminate and cut out all of the parts. Store each set in large individual Ziploc bags. Each set has two mats (one spinner mat and one word building mat), letter cards for building words and picture cards to represent the words they build. The picture cards and letter cards are color-coded to the rectangular spaces on the WORD BUILDING mat. I have also included an answer sheet for students to write their words on. One side is for real words and the other side is for non-sense words. I have included some arrows for the spinners, but you might want to purchase some metal spinners so they will spin better.

To play:

This game can be played in a variety of ways depending whether it is a center activity or a group activity. General directions would be to have students take turns spinning both wheels on the spinner mat, choose the corresponding letter cards and place them on the appropriated rectangles on the word building mat. They would then decide if the word is a real word or a non-sense word. If it is a real word, then they need to look for the correct picture card and place it on their mat. IF they can spell, write and say the word correctly then they get to keep the picture card. If not, they must return it to the pile. The student with the most cards at the end of the game wins. They don’t get any points for nonsense words, though it is good practice for working with the vowel sounds. You may want to adjust the activity for kindergarten.
