Hi Everyone! How well do you know the English Language? Do you know its many different forms? In this game, students will be able to demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.

I have been been playing SMART SPOONS with the students in my classroom since 2004. I love this game and decided to modify it for my students to help perfect their skills. I have shared this edutainment game over the years with teachers all throughout the country. I am so excited that so many teachers have embraced this idea and made it their own.

This resource contains a standard 52 card deck with 2 bonus cards for fun! Just as in the normal spoons game, there are 13 sets of 4 matches. The goal for your learners is to obtain a match of 4 cards with equivalent value. An ANSWER KEY and a BLACK AND WHITE version are included.

I call this game SMART SPOONS because students have to use critical thinking skills to correctly match each set. There are some equivalencies developed to really provide rigor in the classroom.

Directions: Arrange the spoons in a small circle in the center of the table and deal four cards to each player. Each player tries to make four of a kind. The dealer takes a card off the top of the deck to have five cards in his hand, removes one and passes it facedown to the right. Each player discards to the person on his left. The last player places his discard into a trash pile. Cards are picked up and passed quickly around the table until someone gets four of a kind and takes a spoon from the center. Once the player with four of a kind takes a spoon, anyone can take a spoon. The player left without a spoon gets eliminated. If at any time the draw cards run out, pause to reshuffle the trash pile and keep going.

Step 1: Count your players. In the middle of the table, place however many spoons is one less than the number of players you have. For example, if you're playing with 6 people, use 5 spoons.
Step 2: Shuffle a standard 52-card deck and deal 4 cards to each person. Have the dealer keep the deck next to them.
Step 3: Have everyone take one of their cards and discard it to their right simultaneously. The person to the left of the dealer, however, should put one of their cards down on the table to start the discard pile, while the dealer picks up a new card.
Step 4: Repeat this process of everyone passing to the right. Each round the dealer should pick up a new card and the person to their left should add to the discard pile, so as to have a continuous influx of new cards.
Step 5: The first person to have 4 of a kind (e.g. all 4 aces or all 4 nines) has to pick up a spoon. Following this, all other players need to do the same, with the slowest person left without a spoon and out of the game.
Step 6 Remove a spoon every time you remove a player from the game. So if the first round had 6 players and 5 spoons, the second round would consist of 5 players and 4 spoons. Continue playing until you're left with a single person, who is the winner.
