SPY vs. SPY Artemis vs. Mata Hari - History WWI & WWII Espionage Literacy Close Reading Paired Informational Texts Critical Literacy Paragraph Writing Reading Strategies NO PREP PACK differentiated junior intermediate BIG KIDS Workbooks!
Welcome to the literacy battle-dome!
You know what "BIG KIDS" love? Of course you do, you confiscate it from them all the time, battling games and cards! Nothing gets reluctant students going like a good old fashion 'versus' challenge!
Well here is the ultimate. The first in my Spy vs. Spy No Prep Pack Series.
Artemis (Virginia Hall):
Known by her moniker “Artemis” in Germany, Virginia Hall was a US spy who worked with the Special Operations Executive during World War II, and later for the CIA. The Gestapo referred to her as “the most dangerous of all Allied spies”.
Oh, and she only had one leg – the other was amputated from the knee down. She used a wooden leg that she named 'Cuthbert'.
versus the notorious
For the past century, Mata Hari has been remembered as the ultimate femme fatale – the glamorous exotic dancer who allegedly spied for the Germans and the French during World War I. The facts regarding her espionage remain obscure and contested.
I like to use these with partner work, I also like to put them in manila envelopes or files with confidential stamps and marking to up the drama and emotional investment.
Want to do a battle royale?
Have the partners present their spies and the class vote. Then have the winners go up against each other until it is last man standing.
Record the votes, wins, and results and integrate them into your math program, find those teaching moments.
This is serious a hoot!
