Native Americans played an important part of the American History. When the Pilgrims emigrated to the New World, they knew little about the conditions of the country. They suffered diseases throughout their journey on the Mayflower and a lot of them died.
As they landed in the New World, it was late in the year and the winter was at its best. Some of the settlers didn’t survive because they didn’t have shelter, food and medicines. They were really having a hard tme getting used to the land they thought was going to help them start a new life.
It’s important for students to know and understand that the Indians didn’t speak any English and therefore couldn’t communicate with the Pilgrims. Imagine when they met Squanto, who could speak their language perfectly and understand their civilization. The fact that Squanto helped them to keep the peace with other tribes, plant and fish, helped the Pilgrims survive their second winter in the New World. That’s why the Squanto is such an important character in the History of America, because he was vital in their survival in the New World.
