I created these vocabulary power points with the intentions of having them to use year after year with the new curriculum my district is adopting (currently piloting, but chances are....adopting).
Vocabulary and comprehension go hand-in-hand, does it not?! I’m guilty, in the past, of not directly, effectively teaching vocabulary. Sure we teach vocabulary, and scrape the surface. But do the kids remember it long enough to test on, or are they using it and applying it, as well? Wouldn’t our young ones want to read more, even ENJOY it, if they didn’t struggle?
The average student learns 3,000 words a year. Note, I said “average”. This is considering they’ve been worked with from birth, attend school regularly, have support and resources available to them, etc....you know the drill. To those not meeting that criteria, it’s up to us to fill the gaps as explicitly as possible.
