This ALL-in-ONE vocabulary packet for Georgia Studies standard SS8G1 Georgia's Geography contains the following items:
* VOCABULARY and SELF-REFLECTION handout (which you can download for free)
This handout contains key vocabulary terms and definitions from the SS8G1 Georgia Geography standard, a system for students to self-assess their understanding of each term, and study maps to practice identifying the location of Georgia in relation to other geographic areas.
As a Georgia Studies teacher I provide this handout at the beginning of the unit as it is a great way for students to preview, learn, and then review key vocabulary from the SS8G1 Georgia Geography standard. Students rank their understanding of each term on a 1-4 scale similar to the Milestone Achievement levels (Beginner-Developing-Proficient-Distinguished).
Parents of ESEP students enjoy this handout because it provides a quick overview of the Georgia Geography standard, and can be used with their child as a study aid. My advanced students appreciate the self-reflection function of this study guide as they desire to be independent and self-directed learners.
* VOCABULARY PRACTICE QUIZZES (priced separately for $1)
Whether you are wanting to provide a pre-quiz to asses prior knowledge or provide an informal or formal assessment, these quizzes provide a quick snapshot to gauge where students are in their understanding of the standard. I use the definition embedded quiz for my beginning learners or those that need remediation, and use the term embedded quiz for my advanced students.
* VOCABULARY SENTENCE STRIPS (priced separately for $1)
Sentence strips are a great way to get students engaged in their learning. A great activity to begin a unit is to divide the class into two groups. Distribute to each student a vocabulary sentence strip which contains a vocabulary term and definition. Have students will the same vocabulary from each group partner up and learn / rehearse their definition. While the outer circle of students remains stationary, the inner circle of students will rotate to a different student and each will teach their vocabulary term to their peer. You can also use the sentence strips as a Ticket-Out-the-Door closing activity, or simply post them on your walls or bulletin boards as reminders of what they have learned throughout the year. I included sentence strips both with a grid and without the gridlines so that making class sets and cutting is easier.
* VOCABULARY FLASHCARDS (priced separately for $1)
I use the vocabulary flashcards as both a previewing activity and as a review strategy prior to a quiz, test, or during a tutoring session. I've included flashcards with and without the gridlines to make class set copies and cutting the cards easier. I've also positioned the definitions to align with the terms when you make front and back copies.
Take care, and make Georgia Studies EZ for not only your students, but for you as well!
