This SSR program offers a reading piece, a writing piece, and even a vocabulary piece for year-long Sustained Silent Reading. Teacher can also adapt materials to cover single marking periods or semesters as needed. This includes 31 documents for assigning, maintaining and evaluating student reading and writing, as well as Teacher Notes that carefully explain how to set up and sustain this program. This program is designed for high school Grades 9-12, but can be used at the middle school level, homeschooling and Adult Education courses as well.
This program is set up for one class a week dedicated to SSR, and includes twenty-six rotating writing prompts that are aligned with Common Core Standards. This also contains marking period book reviews and a RAFT book project. A complete and extensive logging system for student work is provided, as well as instructions for substitute teachers. Also included are subject category labels for the classroom library and mini-posters detailing SSR schedules and Class Winners for SSR.
The program will take you through the school year, and includes SSR into mid-term and final exams. Also included is an end-of-year student survey; this offers a variety of information the teacher can use at summative administrative meetings.
These activities are scaffolded and differentiated: Teacher determines expectations, SSR schedules, writing prompts and grading. Students have choice regarding what to read and when to write. Students work at their own speed and level to increase comprehension, show understanding and select challenging vocabulary as well. The writing portion of the program can be leveled according to student ability, and an additional “SSR Info Sheet” is provided for special needs students and ESL students.
