Use the selection map in a week-long study of expository/informational text.
Monday: Author's Purpose-choose a verb and complete the statement with a general main idea of the selection
Tuesday: Choose a section to word the main idea from (Topic plus Most Important Idea) or write the main idea of the entire selection (Topic plus Most Important Idea) then add the supporting details
Wednesday: With your students locate an issue in the selection. Choose an argument for or against the issue, then locate a fact that is for or against the issue. Finally, explain why the fact is for or against the issue.
Thursday: Discuss and document the Proposition and Support or Problem and Solution organizational pattern and then discuss how they develop the author's viewpoint or main idea of the selection.
Friday: Fiction text is to be understood (Why did the Little Red Hen not share her food?), but the information in informational text is to be learned/remembered. Document what students will remember about the selection.
