Use the selection map in a week-long study of expository/informational text.
Monday: Author's Purpose-choose a verb and complete the statement with a general main idea of the selection
Tuesday: Choose a section to word the main idea from (Topic plus Most Important Idea) or write the main idea of the entire selection (Topic plus Most Important Idea) then add the supporting details
Wednesday: With your students discuss factual claims, commonplace assertions and opinions. Locate and document these from the text.
Thursday: Discuss and document the structure and organizational patterns in the selection. Classification scheme is the plan the author used in certain sections (listing, narrating, describing, explain, highlighting, etc.).
Friday: Fiction text is to be understood (Why did the Little Red Hen not share her food?), but the information in informational text is to be learned/remembered. Document what students will remember about the selection.
