Figurative language is so fun to teach, but can be tricky to test! The STAAR reading exam asks students to go beyond what type of figurative language is used and instead identify WHY the author used that figurative language. That's where my task cards come in!
These task cards are meant to give students additional practice with identifying the deeper purpose of figurative language. There are only a few cards that ask students to identify what type of figurative language is present in a story. The majority of the cards ask students to identify why the author used a type of figurative language, which is what students will be asked to do on the STAAR reading test. I recommend using these cards AFTER students have learned about the types of figurative language and practiced identifying examples.
These cards can be used in a variety of ways:
Independent or partner practice
“Scoot” game or gallery walk
Small group instruction
Early finisher activity
