If you have already exhausted all the prompts from the released tests, this is one that I put together following the same visual format as what they will receive on the STAAR test.
Tips for helping students brainstorm and gather specific details:
I teach the HELP strategy: history, entertainment, literature, and present events. Students should a cross with four boxes, one for each letter. Within each section they should write everything that comes to mind in each of the categories that is related to the prompt. Then they choose one or two that they like the best and feel they can write strongly and confidently about in relation to the topic.
When grading the essays, look out for broad terms. Ex. "A good friend is someone who helps". Ask the student: helps you do what or helps you how? Can you think of an example of a friend helping someone in this way? Can you give details and describe this situation? This is where HELP comes into play.
