These prompts are modeled after the STAAR assessment expository prompts given to 7th graders in the state of Texas. They are designed to give the students an authentic practice model for test preparation while allowing me to save STAAR releases for authentic benchmarks.
I teach my students to utilize information given on the prompt, such as opening with the quote they are given. Each of my prompts offers different lengths of quotes -- this allows me to teach my students what to do if a quote would end up taking too much of their 26 lines. I also threw in some vocabulary that might challenge the students before they even begin writing -- this helps me teach that we must first understand and break down the prompt before we begin to write.
There are 10 prompts addressing the following topics:
-choosing words wisely
As a young teacher, I am always looking for tips and advice on making my lessons as effective as they can possibly be. If you have suggestions for edits or revisions, please feel free to let me know!
