This graphic organizer can be used for the “Supplemental Aid” accommodation during the STAAR expository writing test. What makes it special is that the Texas Education Agency has set specific guidelines for what students can use during the test and this meets that criteria. According to TEA, the aids can have pictures and mnemonics but may not contain words. If you teach students what each of these pictures and mnemonics mean (see the key), then students can learn to use it on there own. They will need to practice with it ahead of time to ensure efficacy.
Although this was designed with 7th grade in mind, you can use this for any grade level of the STAAR writing test. Students with an IEP or 504 plan and corresponding accommodations may qualify, but you must check the child's paperwork. You can also find a presentation to teach your students about the STAAR expository writing test and other resources by going to my store. Enjoy!
