Do you look at the rubrics posted on the STAAR test and wonder how you will get kids to remember all the components of a STAAR essay?
I have put the STAAR essay rubrics in an easy to understand text for students.
Here's an example of part of my STAAR Persuasive Rubric:
5 points Start your paper in an interesting way or use background information (first sentence)
10 Points Clear thesis with your position and two reasons
5 points Thesis located in the last sentence of the introduction
By assigning points to each concept, students know how important each component is and it is also looks like the rubrics that they always use in English class.
Also, this rubric makes the essay easier to grade for the teacher and breaks components down.
Also, included is a 4 page persuasive peer editing page that can be completed by students sitting in small groups and trading papers.
In addition, there is a 2 page expository peer editing page that can be completed the same way.
I use this with my regular and advanced 10th graders in a public school in Texas.
