Students in Texas all have to face and endure the STAAR Test at almost all grade levels. The STAAR Reading Test is no exception. The test includes five selections of high interest topics and multiple choice questions.
(This assessment is also helpful to those teaching Common Core Standards and provides students with a thorough range of questions for testing purposes.)
Falling From the Sky (realistic fiction)
Sinking Ships (nonfiction)
Summer Fun (poem)
Pink River Dolphins (nonfiction)
Rocket Rebel (realistic fiction)
The test has 35 questions in the same format as the State test. An answer key is included.
This unit was designed to teach students how to perform successfully on the STAAR Reading Test. Building their endurance, stamina, and self esteem is essential for success on the test.
*I encourage this unit to also be taught in the earlier grades to expose students to the format of the test and help build their endurance for such an extensive assessment. (This assessment may be too difficult for second graders, but could be used with high achieving students who are on a third or fourth grade reading level.)
The key to passing this test is early intervention and practice!
