The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
“The Ransom of Red Chief” by O. Henry
“The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving
The Adventures of the Speckled Band by Arthur Conan Doyle
“The Finish of Patsy Barnes” by Paul Laurence Dunbar
“The Story-Teller” by Saki
“A Piece of Steak” by Jack London
9/11 Commission Report
Encyclopedia – Video Games
Encyclopedia – Snakes
Encyclopedia – Sharks
Encyclopedia – Reality Television
Encyclopedia – Special Effects
The New York Times – 1920
Barack Obama’s Inaugural Address
Remarks upon Signing the Civil Rights Bill (by President Johnson)

There are a total of 40 warm ups with 2 questions per warm-up. (80 questions total) Some of the excerpts are used more than once. (There are a total of 17 excerpts)

All of the questions are open ended. The questions are designed to look like questions they may see on the STAAR test. The questions that are asked have been created using STAAR stems and modeled from the released STAAR passages. Because the questions are open ended, there is a possibility for more than one answer to the questions, however, I have included a possible answer key for these questions.
