This lab is aligned with Common Core and Texas TEKS Resource System. The lab includes guiding questions that question how different states of matter look and behave differently. There are lab and journal sheets for students, instructions for teachers, and an evaluation at the end (answers included). Students will do activities or observe activities that test properties of different types of solids...rubber bands, washers, salt, pepper, ice cubes, and marmallows. Students also explore how liquids react to changes in various sized containers and how they fill the bottom of a container, while a solid does not necessarily do that. Gases are explored using engaging activities with balloons. Lots of comparisons are made. These activities are easy to direct and the materials are easy to collect. After the labs, students will be able to understand the definitions of solids, liquids, and gases in a meaningful way.
