The Meticulous English Teacher Asks:
Are you looking for something that is a step-by-step approach to teaching STAAR short answers, but that also scaffolds students' burgeoning writing abilities while encouraging critical thinking? Well, look no further.
This strategy is a labor of love two years in the making. At my Texas high school my colleagues and I have struggled with short answer questions in the post TAKS era. I remember being taught at an in-service to teach short answers for TAKS as "APE": answer, prove, explain. While this approach worked for TAKS, STAAR is a different, bigger beast that deserve a different, more nuanced approach to teaching the short answer questions. I have been creating, revising, and testing short answer methods ever since I started teaching a STAAR intervention reading class. This is the method that has worked best for my students who are struggling readers, writers, and oftentimes ELL students.
I recently presented these ideas as a short training to my department and they were THRILLED. I've been hearing great things that they are doing with these materials as well.
