I made this activity for my students to use as guided practice for 5.4B, with equations in which the variable only appears in the result. Once this type problem is mastered, we will move on to equations in which the variable appears within the problem side of the equation. Another document, “5.4B Variables in the Equation for Beginners” is also available through TPT.
Ideas for Use:
1. Have students work with elbow partners and either notebooks or dry erase boards and markers. If the cells are cut out as cards, you could let the pairs roll a die and win the card if it a) is their turn and b) they get the item correct.
2. Have students work with elbow partners and simply highlight the correct answer after proving that they are correct in notebooks or on dry erase boards.
3. Cut the cells into cards and create a scavenger hunt.
4. Print them as sheets and have students justify their answers in writing on the provided answer sheet.
