The vocabulary on STAAR test questions can be daunting for a 7th grader. While I take time to teach this vocabulary all year, I use this right before testing as a review.
The first part of this handout is a matching activity. Students will take the word or skill and match it to a simplified definition.
ex. convey = sends the message
infer = making an educated guess
In addition, most STAAR questions don't explicitly state the skill that students should use to help them answer the question. I searched the released tests and found several question stems that are vague and created a second matching activity. Students will need to match the question stem to the skill they will need to use to answer the question.
ex. Supporting Details = How does paragraph ____ support the author's position about...
I allow my students to work in groups during this activity and I usually use it as a station activity during our STAAR blitz (right before testing). This may be challenging, but the discussion that occurs is what helps them the most. Seeing the format of test questions is a HUGE help for them!
