One-page editable guide to expository essay writing for the STAAR Writing exam. Teachers may use it to guide their own instruction, step-by-step and/or pass it out to students as a handout.
Includes pre-writing tips, a sample prompt, sample brainstorm, sample visual organizer, sample outline, sample thesis statement.
My very low-scoring students improved an average of 250 points using these pre-writing strategies and tips. (My students are often LEP/ELL and come from low-income homes. My passing rate for English II in 2014 was 83%. For English I at my new school it was 69% and 72% with Eng. I and II combined; the rest of the district is in the low 50s.)
My feeling is that students who pre-write are better prepared to tackle the essay. This one-pagers shows students six steps and takes students and teachers through step four. (Step 5 and 6 are to write--the previous steps are pre-writing activities) and re-write.)
