This STAAR writing practice is designed to be a beginning level practice. Students start by revising and editing the passage using open-ended questions as a group. Students then answer four revision multiple-choice questions and three spelling only editing questions. The incorrect answer choices in editing only contain basic capitalization and end punctuation. The correct answers to the spelling questions offer an opportunity to discuss finding past tense words in the dictionary as well as point out that sometimes a word can be spelled correctly in the passage and still be the wrong word. This is the perfect practice for the beginning of the year to familiarize students with the STAAR format in a less frustrating way. For those teachers also teaching social studies, the passage contains some information about LBJ (TEKS 18A), Lady Bird (TEKS 17D), and the story of how our state flower came to be planted along our roadways. This is a great passage to use after my bluebonnet STAAR writing practice.
