I love to organize my class with small group instruction (especially with my struggling learners). However, I need a viable activity for my higher students that reviews and challenges. I love The Important Book as a template for students to create their own book.
For a review, I give my students the list of science topics we study and ask them to create their own book. The process takes thinking, revision, and clarifying. They will love spending time sketching and organizing their thoughts.
You could assign an entire book to one student or to a group of students. The group aspect allows for collaboration. :)
After our big test, I like to organize a BOOK TOUR with younger grades so my students have an audience for their work. I like to tell them ahead of time that they WILL share their work, so they take great care of their quality.
I am including some templates for this project to make it easy to implement, but if you want to save money, you could always have your students use blank paper! The RELA teachers will love that you are WRITING ACROSS THE CURRICULUM!
