My teaching mentor did a fabulous thing in her classroom. She had the students nominate each other for the Star Student or Student of the Week each week. I have taken on this tradition and created a S.T.A.R. Student Classroom Packet to help others get started with this neat tradition.
The great thing is that this system not only engages your whole class to find the great things about each other, it gives them guidance, demonstrates who is or is not usually picked for the teacher's knowledge, and the nominated students get positive notes each week.
In my classroom, the students may nominate each other throughout the week using the S.T.A.R. Student Nominations Forms that I keep in a jar next to the Nomination Tub. I then collect the nominations, record who is consistently being nominated or not, pass the positives notes out to the students at the end of the week, and prepare the winner's certificate. I actually have my students vote each week; however, I am careful to try to include everyone at some point throughout the year (I am also allowed to nominate someone in our room as well). You can certainly use these materials any way you like to suit your needs in your classroom.
This pack includes the following:
+S.T.A.R. Student Tub Signage (Large and Medium) in various colors
(the signage displays the meaning of the acronym S.T.A.R. on the label)
