This book is rated as a Lexile 590 book, or a Guided Reading Level V; the high interest and low readability level of this book allow weaker readers to access higher level thinking, reasoning, and real world applications. Although recommendations for this text range from 9th-12th grade interest, the grade level reading equivalent is entry 6th grade. Sidenote: My 11-13 year old young ladies especially enjoyed this book, and so I designed my questions according to the standards addressed in these age groups.

This document is for use in public and/or home-school classrooms to get students thinking more deeply about the books that they are reading. Analysis of texts, characters, and language are extraordinarily important, and the rigor at which we provide our instruction must match the high expectations we all have for our students.
I tried to segment the book into what I interpreted as the “beginning”, “middle” and “end”. The layout is designed so that students are given only one page (printed front and back) at a time; page 3 and 4 of this document would be printed together, done by kids, handed in, and then they would work on page 5 and 6, 7 and 8, etc. This allows kids to move forward in the book without feeling overwhelmed, and gives teachers the opportunity to assess reading more frequently.
