I learned the STARS Method from my band director. This PowerPoint differs from the standard to be more accessible for my ELL students by grouping similar notation in written music (i.e. Time and Key Signature). For example, the first S is for Signatures as opposed to "Sharps and Flats". The T is also changed to indicate only Tempo.
The presentation goes through each acronym and gives musical examples of what to look for before performing a sight-reading piece. I usually use this to go step-by-step the first time my students will sight-read with a very basic piece of music. As they improve their sight-reading I have them retell what each acronym stands for and identify and share their findings (in partners and then individually) in the music
