This cross-curricular unit celebrates Native American Day, October 12, 2015, the second Monday of the month. This unit from STEAM AHEAD with Music is the second in a new series celebrating international days on the calendar. The unit has not yet been taught, so feedback will be great!
The unit features three lessons with the goal of understanding drumming in the native American culture as well as exploring the science and engineering aspects of the drum. Students will have the opportunity to build their own drums, experiment with various drum strikes with the hand, and participate in a facilitated drum circle. Carefully selected Internet resources form the basis of the lessons for listening and learning. The unit includes three student worksheets to help guide the lessons.
The unit may be used in the music classroom, but is accessible to the classroom teacher with little or no experience. Challenge suggestions are included for older grades.
