Engineering now plays a new, stronger role in the science standards. Students in all grades are expected to identify and solve real world problems in situations that people would like to change or improve, in addition to the traditional science challenges of asking questions and figuring out how our world works. The engineering process is now considered to be a life skill, not just a set of skills reserved for those who will choose engineering as a career. STEAM (the integration of Science, Technology, Art, Engineering, and Math) is becoming the next new tool that we must add to our teacher’s toolkit.

Arts integration is currently joining the engineering design process in many classrooms. Using the arts: visual, drama, writng, and music allows students to use their strengths and interests to enhance their work. The arts provide infinite ways to view and demonstrate responses to STEM challenges. This versatile journal reflects the inclusion of the arts in the engineering design process.
