This school year Portable Gifted and Talented is filling up the portable with whole-class enrichment lessons. The lessons are designed to be used by a gifted resource teacher in a “push-in” model or for classroom teachers who want to reach all levels of ability in an engaging way.

This enrichment is designed for whole-class 4th and 5th grade or gifted and talented and high ability 3rd grade students. Success in this unit will rely on hands-on application of math concepts, engineering and design, and creativity.
In this unit, student will construct a maze for a marble using common classroom materials, practice calculating the area of common shapes, multiply using the distribute property, examine nets of 3D objects, measure with the metric system, learn about surface area, and discuss the relationship between fractions and percentages. Students will gather data, calculate elapsed time, and find the mean using a calculator.
• Flat, rectangular soda boxes (for a case of soda) or bulk paper lid boxes; any rectangular box with upright edges (one per student)
• Cardboard and cardstock
• Tape and glue
• Marbles (one per student)
• Junk drawer items
Time: At least 3 hours—best if broken up into 30-60 minute sessions
