Amsterdam Pulley Challenge
This STEAM lesson is designed to get students thinking about simple machines and how they work. Centered around the pulley system, this easy STEAM activity asks students to work cooperatively with a team to design and test a pulley system. This mimics the pulley system used in Amsterdam to get large furniture inside narrow homes through windows. I have designed this lesson to pair with my Amsterdam Travel Book, which can be found in my TpT store.
This download includes:
1. Pre STEAM activity to get students thinking creatively to an Amsterdam moving problem
2. STEAM lesson recording sheet for students to record all parts of the STEAM process
3. Pictures of my class trying out their own pulley systems
I recommend pairing this lesson with an introduction to simple machines. In the download, I share a book I used with my class. You can also use any simple machine resources you have to prepare your students for this STEAM challenge.
With references to Amsterdam, I also recommend you pair this activity with either my small book on Amsterdam or your own resources.
