This land speeders STEM project is part of a full 18 hour GATE unit titled, “Land Speeders, Sailboats, Signal Flags, and Semaphores.” You can find the full unit in my store available for just a couple dollars more.
In the land speeders project, students will design logos, build land speeders, and then complete a creative and physics activity with them.
You’ll get all the instructions you need including a rubric, sample photos, and ready-to-print activity sheets with this download. Purchase a few materials at your local craft store, and you’ll be ready to go the next day.
First, students become graphic designers as they consider language connotations and design a logo for their land speeder’s sail.
Then it’s on to building the land speeders. It’s fun and just challenging enough to complete in a one hour time block.
Once land speeders have been constructed, students’ creative originality is challenged as they design a game which will include their land speeders. The games are created to meet standards in a rubric.
Finally, students conduct a physics experiment as they learn about initial and final positions, displacement, and velocity.
Level: 3rd-6th grades
