Product Description
STEM Challenges: Here’s a set of three challenges that all involve Newton’s Laws of Motion! Students will be learning about the second and third laws specifically and designing bottle cars, egg cars, and Newton’s cradles! Fabulous and fun!

Please note: This package contains three challenges. Each may be purchased separately.

Students will follow the steps of the Engineering Design Process for each challenge. The packages contain step-by-step procedures for the teacher that are clearly marked with the Design Process steps. The accompanying lab sheets for students are also marked. Students will plan independently and then join with teammates as they create the best design possible. Of course, constant improvements take place as students try their designs.

Some specifics about each design challenge:
In Build a Bottle Car students will use materials to design and build a balloon powered car. The car must roll on a straight path and travel as much distance as possible before the balloon is exhausted. This challenge will demonstrate the third law of motion and also demand that students work together to design wheels, axles, and the blowing mechanism of their cars. The tricky attachment of the axles and wheels will try their patience and create opportunities to improve their vehicles. Can the cars race down a straight track? Will the wheels roll properly? Will the balloon propel with enough force to cause forward movement? Materials needed include: Empty water bottles, Balloons- 8-9 inch diameter, Straws- 2 sizes, Dowel sticks or wooden skewers, Masking tape, Pipe cleaners, Rubber bands, Round objects for wheels, Cardboard pieces, and Track for racing. (The track is optional.)

In Build an Egg Car students will use materials to design and create a vehicle. The vehicle must transport cargo down a ramp in the fastest and safest way possible. The students will need to plan the best way to overcome friction and maintain enough speed to make it down the ramp. In addition, the vehicle will have to be stable enough to transport the precious cargo without damaging it. The cargo just happens to be an egg! Can they build a safe vehicle? How will they get the vehicle to slide or roll down the ramp? Will the cargo arrive safely? What will happen if the angle of the ramp is changed? Finally, because my students really love this feature, I added a budget. Students must “purchase” materials to use and stay within a set spending amount. Materials needed include: Craft sticks, Straws, Cardboard pieces, Cardboard tubes, Masking tape, Wooden skewers, Round objects for wheels, Plastic and real eggs, Pipe cleaners, Rubber bands, Paper clips and binder clips, Weights (like pennies) for the eggs, and a Ramp. The ramp can be a long piece of cardboard or foam board. Side “rails” are optional, but helpful!

In Build a Newton’s Cradle students will use materials to design and create a Newton’s Cradle. In this event students will review what they know about the laws of motion- especially the third law. Students will have to build the frame for the device, a way to attach string to the marbles, and a way to attach string to the frame. This can include measuring as the length of the strings is a factor. Materials needed include: Craft sticks, Straws, Beads, Cardboard pieces, Masking tape, Pipe cleaners, Rubber bands, Paper clips and binder clips, Marbles, String, and Hot Glue guns and glue- one glue gun per team. The option of using hot glue for the assembly is yours to make. You may want to ask for parental help in your classroom- depending on the age of your students. This was tested with fifth graders.
