PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

STEM Challenges: Here’s a set of three challenges that all involve Valentine’s Day! Students will love discussing all they know and like about this February holiday and then design and build boxes, zip line containers, and bow and arrows!

Please note: This package contains three challenges. Each may be purchased separately.

Students will follow the steps of the Engineering Design Process for each challenge. The packages contain step-by-step procedures for the teacher that are clearly marked with the Design Process steps. The accompanying lab sheets for students are also marked. Students will plan independently and then join with teammates as they create the best design possible. Of course, constant improvements take place as students try their designs.

Some specifics about each design challenge:
In Build a Candy Box students will design a candy box that will exactly hold a specific amount of candy. They will have a few pieces to use in helping plan the box. They will build and decorate the box and then test it to see if the dimensions are perfect. And, since this is a Valentine box, it must be heart shaped! Along the way they will have the chance to pre-test the box and make adjustments in its size if they feel changes are needed. After improving and finishing, each team will present its work and then test it with all of the candy. Which group will have the perfect fit? Can the teams decorate in a creative or unusual way? Materials needed include: Clear tape, Card stock, Copy paper, Construction paper, Straws, String or yarn, Glue sticks, and CANDY! NOTE: This package also contains materials and prep page, constraints page, lab sheet, and photos for using this challenge as a Christmas Candy Gift Box.

In Build a Bow and Arrow students will use materials to make a bow and an arrow. They will have chances to practice with the bow and modify their design. Finally, they will compete against one another to hit a target. They will find that some of the materials create rather flimsy bows which will not withstand the pull-back and firing of the arrow. They will also have to make an arrow that will fit the bow frame they create. The most fun is learning how to use the device they build! There is definitely a learning curve to this! Just a note: We followed strict safety guidelines with this challenge. It was tested with fifth graders. Materials needed include: Straws, Craft sticks, Rubber bands, Paper clips, Cotton swabs, Construction paper, and Masking tape. Note: A page has been added to help you with the distance from the launching line to the target!

In Build a Valentine Delivery Zip Line students will use materials to make a carrier for a Valentine’s Day gift. The carrier will have to fly down a zip line holding the gift that is being delivered. The zip line as a delivery method is just part of the fantastic gift! Students have to build the gift carrier, a way to attach the carrier to the zip line, and decorate it to be pretty enough to give as a gift. In the end each group will share its gift box and demonstrate how it flies down the zip line to be delivered in a most unique way. Materials needed include: Copy paper, cardstock, Construction paper, Masking tape, Straws, Craft sticks, Binder clips, Paper clips, String, Fishing line, and an item to use as the gift being delivered on the zip line. NOTE: This package also contains materials and prep page, constraints, lab sheet, and photos for using this as a Santa Delivery Zip Line.
