STEM Challenges: Here’s a set of three challenges that all involve using wind power to propel something. Students will be building a wind-powered boat, a wind-powered car, and a windmill! It’s all part of a seasonal package celebrating the windy month of March!

Please note: This package contains three challenges. Each may be purchased separately.

Students will follow the steps of the Engineering Design Process for each challenge. The packages contain step-by-step procedures for the teacher that are clearly marked with the Design Process steps. The accompanying lab sheets for students are also marked. Students will plan independently and then join with teammates as they create the best design possible. Of course, constant improvements take place as students try their designs.

Some specifics about each design challenge:
In Build a Wind-Powered Car students will be using materials to design a rolling car that is wind-powered. They will have to consider the placement of the car’s axle and the size of the wheels in order to make the best car. Also, they must decide if a very long car is the right way to complete this task. In order to use wind power, the car will need a wind catching device- like a sail! Many decisions will be considered to solve these problems! Finally, the car will be tested by blowing a very strong wind (a fan) on it to see just how far it will travel. Materials needed include: Cardboard tubes, Wooden skewers, Masking tape, Pipe cleaners, Cardboard pieces, Cardstock, construction paper, copy paper, Straws, and a Fan.

In Build a Wind-Powered Boat students will be using materials to design a boat that will sail successfully because of the sail they create. The challenge is all about the sail because the body of the boat is made from an unsinkable material! First, students will experiment with different geometric shapes and sizes and test to see which works best. They may also experiment with using non-geometric shapes and test those. Finally, they will use the experiment data to design and build a sail for their ultimate wind-powered boat! Materials needed include: Cardboard tubes, Pool noodles, Craft sticks,
Wooden skewers, Craft foam sheets, Straws, Masking tape, Long pan for water,
Fan, and Paper towels.

In Build a Windmill students will be using materials to design a windmill that has turning blades that are powered by the wind. Students will be faced with deciding what to use for the turning mechanism and ensure that it turns well. They will also have to design the blades of the windmill to best catch the wind and turn smoothly. The design of the windmill tower itself comes into play as it must provide a stable platform on which to place the turning mechanism and blades. Materials needed include: Cardboard tubes, Craft sticks, Masking tape, Round objects that have center holes, Straws, Dowel sticks or wooden skewers, Rubber bands, Pipe cleaners, Paper - cardstock, construction paper, copy paper, and a fan.
